Registration is open now for summer camps presented by the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s ArtPlay.

ArtPlay provides opportunities for students ages 6-18 to discover the artist within through musical theater and visual arts camps, all in an encouraging and welcoming environment.

ArtPlay teaching artists strive to bring out creativity in all students participating in summer camps. Camps are designed for participants to learn something new each session. All camps are open now for registration. Pre- and post-camp care options are available with early drop-off at 7:30 and pickup no later than 5:30 p.m. See the list of camps and register at AlysStephens.org.

ArtPlay Musical Theatre camps

For summer 2023, ArtPlay musical theater camps will present “Seussical, Jr.,” “The Magic Treehouse: Pirates Past Noon Kids” and “Mean Girls, Jr.” The camps emphasize the tools it takes to create a show from scratch, with an introduction to singing and dancing and lessons in acting, music, and stage craft. Each camp will culminate in a final showcase: a full production on stage at UAB’s Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center. No experience is required. Register online.

  • Camp I, “Seussical, Jr.,” for ages 10-16 and directed by Reid Watson, is from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Monday-Friday, June 5-16. Cost is $475; class capacity is 40.
  • Camp II, “Magic Treehouse: Pirates Past Noon” for ages 6-12 and directed by Jennifer Salvant, is from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Monday-Friday, June 20-30. Cost is $475; class capacity is 40.
  • Camp III, “Mean Girls, Jr.” for ages 12-18 and directed by Reid Watson, is from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday, July 10-29. Cost is $600; class capacity is 40.

ArtPlay Visual Arts camps

ArtPlay’s award-winning visual arts camps are a chance to get creative — and maybe just a little messy — with classes in drawing, painting, sculpture, crafts and more. Join local teaching artists as they guide students through the basics of color, shape and design. Each day is a new project with lots of new creations. At the end of camp, the artists will present their own creations in an art gallery for invited family and friends in the historic ArtPlay House in Five Points South.

ArtPlay Visual Arts Camp A is June 12-16, Camp B is June 26-30, and Camp C is July 17-21.

All three camps are for ages 6-12. Camps will meet from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday-Friday. Cost is $290; each camp capacity is 30. Register online.
