Puppetry is one of the oldest forms of art and entertainment, dating back to ancient Egypt. Puppeteers are artists who create lifelike puppets by hand, using materials such as wood, fabric, and even human hair. The Center for Puppetry Arts in Atlanta showcases a wide variety of puppets from around the world through its galleries and live puppet shows with themes based on classic stories like Cinderella or Peter Pan. Upon entering the center, get your ticket on the second floor then head out to the Atrium to go to the Worlds of Puppetry Museum section which is made up of two main areas: the Jim Henson Collection— a collection of puppets, props, and artwork that were used in all of Henson’s productions.

The collection comprises over 3,000 items including Kermit the Frog and Elmo dolls. The second one is the Global Collection which features a wide variety of puppets from different cultures and time periods. In this collection, you can see string puppets from Asia, rod puppets from Africa and Europe, hand puppets from South America and so much more.

Upstairs from the Atrium is the Mainstage Theater, where live puppet shows with a variety of themes take place. Puppet shows here include classics like Cinderella and Peter Pan as well as adult humor. They are performed by professional puppeteers who use only the highest quality materials. You can also check out their Create-A-Puppet Workshop to build paper puppets and don’t forget about the gift shop— you can even buy your own puppet. Admission to the museum only is free for children under two years old; $12 for ages 2 to 12; $16 for adults and $14 for seniors aged 55 and above. However, if you decided to watch live shows it will vary depending on the price of each individual show. Whether you’re a longtime fan or a newcomer to the world of puppetry, the Center of Puppetry Arts is sure to delight and entertain.
